LIONEL F. RUBIN, V.M.D.
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Opthalmologists
SATURDAY January 28, 2006
ALL BREEDS WELCOME
In the interest of breeding better dogs genetically, all breeding stock should be examined and cleared annually by a VETERINARIAN OPTHALMOLOGIST to continue in any breeding program. Inherited eye anomalies are not always detected with the "naked eye" or by your veterinarian.
From Dr. Lionel Rubin.....
The examination covers almost all portions of the eye. Depending on the breed and age of the dog, the following diseases can be detected:
1. Cataract (opacity of the lens), especially the genetic type in many breeds, especially in: Spaniels, Retrievers, Siberians, and Schnauzers*
2. Progressive retinal atrophy, a serious blinding disease, especially in: Poodles, Spaniels, Retrievers, Siberians, and Schnauzers*
3. Retinal dysplasia, an abnormal development of a portion (or all) of the retina, especially in: Cockers, Springers, Labs, Goldens, and Corgis.
4. Retinal folds, (a less serious problem than Retinal Dysplasia) in: Cockers, Springers, Labs, Goldens, Corgis, and Samoyeds.
5. Persistent pupillary membrane, occurs in all breeds, but is most important in: Corgis, Basenjis, and English Cockers.
6. Collie eye anomaly, a birth defect in: Collies, Shelties, and Aussies.
7. Corneal dystrophy, especially in Siberians.
*many other breeds and problems
The exam is a general eye exam, which can also detect non-genetic abnormalities and problems. However, it is not a medical examination for existing problems; it is a screening exam for dogs which may enter the breeding arena.
Fees: 1-5 dogs $25.00 each
6+ dogs $23.00 each
Please Note: CERF forms will cost $3.00 extra. Alternate exam forms will be available for those using a different organization, at no cost.
